A friend once told me that there are three reasons that he is Catholic: “Eucharist, Eucharist and Eucharist.” While there are all sorts of reasons to be Catholic, I think they all stem from, and can be traced back to, the three mentioned by my friend.
Pope Francis, while speaking on the importance of attending Mass during the Angelus, made several comments on the Eucharist (shown below). The one that captured my attention most pretty much sums it up for me.

I go to Church when I feel like it, and I pray better alone.’ But the Eucharist is not a private prayer or a beautiful spiritual experience. This wondrous Event took place in the 8th century A.D. in the little Church of St. Legontian in Lanciano, Italy, as a divine response to a Basilian monk’s doubt about Jesus’ Real Presence in the Eucharist.
During Holy Mass, after the two-fold consecration, the host was changed into Heart Tissue Flesh and the Wine was changed into Actual Blood, which coagulated into five globules, irregular and differing in shape and size.

…Recently, my father passed away and we had a funeral Mass celebrated. The Mass was well attended by family and friends, not all of whom were Catholic, or practicing Catholics. When it came time for communion, as is typical on occasions where there would normally be non-Catholics attending, the priest made the same announcement with the addition that anyone not receiving could come forward, if they wished, with their hands crossed over their chest and receive a blessing.
As I discovered later, this caused some confusion, as well as some damaged feelings on the part of some of the attendees. And as came to light later, there was a massive misunderstanding in the room of what The Eucharist is, particularly as taught by the Catholic Church.
To the non-Catholic, and, sadly, even many Catholics, the Eucharist is probably one of the least understood things about the Catholic Mass, indeed about Catholicism in general. In addition, many people don’t know that they don’t understand it. Indeed, millions of Catholics go to communion in robotic fashion, not discerning the Body and Blood of Christ. (1 Cor 11:23-30) To many, it’s just what you do at church.
Hence, the reason I’ve decided to jot down some thoughts on the subject. I envision the distinct possibility of me dying someday, and I don’t want the same thing to happen at my funeral, so I just want to clear up a few things on the Eucharist for Catholics and non-Catholics alike, in hopes of helping someone avoid the same confusion (or worse) when they find themselves planted in the pews and saying “goodbye” to old Bill…

I’d like to cover a lot, and I’d like to tell you in advance what I’m going to tell you. I’d like to move from one to another to a third area. The first area I’d like to focus on is how it is that Christ in the Last Supper and in the Eucharist offers himself up as the New Covenant Passover, and how the Eucharist and the Old Testament Passover are in a sense two sides of the same coin. The second focus of our time will be on the Nature of the Mass, then, as a sacrifice. That was big problem for me, and that’s a big problem for lots of people outside the church and I think for some people in the church too, who wonder about how it is that after Calvary we can still speak of any activity that is performed on earth as being a sacrifice of Christ. And then finally the third area for our consideration will be on what Our Proper Response would be to our Lord in the Eucharist, in the blessed Sacrament. In other words, why should we adore our Lord in the Eucharist as opposed to just any old place we happen to be? In other words, we’ll conclude on the note of Eucharistic adoration, and why that is a fit, proper, and very necessary act of devotion in the family of God, the Catholic Church.
Let’s go back to the first, the Eucharist as Passover. What I’d like to share in this first part is not what theologians would call de fide; it isn’t infallibly defined dogma that binds the conscience, the intellect and will of every Catholic believer. Instead, what I’d like to do is just to share my own Scripture study in sort of an abbreviated form that led me to see something that I didn’t think was possible – it led me to see that the Last Supper and Christ’s sacrifice on Calvary and the Eucharist are all of one piece. Some scholars might dispute this. You can’t find all Scripture scholars agreeing on anything these days, so I don’t lose much sleep over the fact that there might be some scripture scholars who dispute this point. But through my own study (and I’ve checked this with others who are more qualified and better trained scholars than me) it helps. It’s been an explanation that has provided insight for others as well. It’s not entirely original, but for me it was a discovery of my own before I discovered it in the writings of other great and holy and wise authors.

We’re going to be focusing on the very center of the faith this morning, and I feel so woefully inadequate because there is just so much to say about the Blessed Sacrament. It’s a sacrament and it’s a sacrifice in which Our Lord Jesus Christ not only establishes a covenant, but really, is the covenant. And the sacrament contains our Lord Jesus Christ, body, blood, soul and divinity; but it’s also an offering. So in the Eucharist Our Lord Jesus Christ body and blood, soul and divinity is offered to the Father continually in an unbloody manner. Then, finally, it’s not just contained. It’s not just offered but it’s received. All three of those elements are crucial to understanding how the Eucharist is both a sacrifice and a sacrament. And when it’s received, we call that Holy Communion. All three of those belong together. They are inseparable. They are critical.
Now we’ve got to say one thing right off the bat. We are talking about an unbloody sacrifice and we are talking about a sacrifice in which Christ’s death is represented. We are not talking about a bloody sacrifice where Christ is still bleeding. We are not talking about the fact that Christ is still dying on Calvary. He’s not dying. He’s been buried. He’s been raised. He’s ascended. He’s enthroned and there he is in glory. But as he is in glory, he is the Lamb of God, enthroned as the Pascal Lamb; and so all of this belongs together in a very deep and mysterious way and I for one do not pretend to think that I can encapsulate or summarize it all adequately.
Now let’s just also remind ourselves of another important theological doctrine. God is omnipresent. God is present everywhere; but Jesus Christ in His humanity, that is the flesh and the blood that He assumed for Himself from the Blessed Virgin Mary, that is only in heaven. That is spatially limited. In addition to its space, to its place in heaven however, we also say that through the miracle of the Mass and the Eucharist, Jesus Christ, not just in His divine nature, which is present everywhere; but in His human nature is present on the altars of the Church around the world as Mass is celebrated daily approximately 300,000 times each day.
