In Chapter 12 in the Gospel of Luke, Jesus tells us that a sin against the Holy Spirit cannot be Forgiven (And whosoever speaks a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but to him that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven. – LK 12:10).

As a teenager, this used to make me wonder what a sin against the Holy Spirit consists of. In fact, I wondered if I had ever committed the unforgivable sin. I was assured by a priest friend of mine that I had not.

But I still was not clear on what that sin could be, and it wasn’t until many years later that I got a sense of what it took to commit a sin that would not be forgiven. It’s not that God cannot forgive any sin – He can. There is nothing we can do that God cannot forgive. Nothing.

Well if that’s the case, why does Jesus tell us that sin against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven? What really has to happen for one to be guilty of the unforgivable sin? What’s the one thing that will absolutely send us to Hell, and how can I avoid it?

If you are as interested as I am in knowing the answer to that, and why the answer is what it is, click on the URL below and listen to this presentation by Fr. Andrew Apostoli. He really clears things up.

What Are Sins Against The Holy Spirit?
